Consent for Paekākāriki seawall

Paekākāriki residents are a step closer to having a new seawall on their beach now it has consent from Greater Wellington Regional Council.

The seawall will be constructed out of timber, concrete and rock and will replace the old timber one which has been in place for about 35 years. The consent covers the new seawall, as well as the existing rock revetments at either end of the wall, for a period of 35 years.

A community design group was heavily involved in choosing the concept design to ensure the seawall reflected community values in Paekākāriki.

“The community had plenty of time to discuss their preferred design in terms of amenity, as well as engineering issues such as access to dry beach, recreational possibilities and preferred materials,” Paekākāriki-Raumati Ward Councillor Janet Holborow says.

Now the project has been consented, work will commence on the detailed design of the seawall followed by construction. It is expected to be completed in 2018 with an estimated price tag of $11 million.

“This is a brilliant outcome that reflects all the hard work the team has done with the community and Greater Wellington to get this over the line,” Sean Mallon, Council’s Group Manager Infrastructure Services says. “We will continue to involve residents and consult with them over the design details.”

The Paekākāriki seawall is one of the priority projects identified in the long term plan 2015-35.
