Chlorination in Hawea

Chlorination in Hawea

A small number of Hawea residents will notice their water is chlorinated for the next few days, while QLDC and Veolia investigate how a possum got into in the town’s reservoir.

Routine testing showed elevated e-Coli counts this morning and emergency chlorination is being put in place.

Because most Hawea properties can be supplied directly from the town’s new borefield, bypassing the reservoir, the chlorination will only affect the motorcamp and properties on the west side of the dam.

QLDC Chief Engineer Ulrich Glasner said an inspection this morning showed evidence of a possum in the reservoir. How it entered the closed system is unclear.

Veolia will flush the reservoir today and it will be emptied for a detailed inspection next week.

Mr Glasner said chlorination would continue until the Council could be confident that all extraneous material had been removed from the reservoir and the possum’s entry route had been identified and blocked off.
