Kāpiti residents encouraged to continue recycling plastic bags
The Council is advising residents to continue bundling different types of recyclables using plastic bags if they wish, while encouraging them to choose reusable bags as much as possible.
Due to international market conditions plastic bags from Kāpiti are currently not recycled, but were in the past and opportunities are being actively sought. Bundling into the bags also speeds up the kerbside sorting process.
A Waste Management NZ facility at Seaview sorts and sells different plastic grades collected in Kapiti to local and international recyclers. Due to very low oil prices plastic manufacturers are currently using more virgin and not recycled material – and that has limited on-selling opportunities for plastic bags. This may change as oil prices change.
Waste Management do recycle all other 1-7s plastics. To find out more about, including what is collected and recycled in Kāpiti, please visitwww.kapiticoast.govt.nz/recycling-plastic-bags
