Storm update for Auckland region: Windy night, rain has moved off
High winds and heavy rain have buffeted the Auckland region overnight but the worst is over.
Auckland Civil Defence has monitored the storm overnight and kept in touch with Metservice, emergency services, transport agencies and utilities across the region.
High winds peaked in the early hours of the morning, bringing down some trees and branches which have been dealt with by the council, and prompting around 90 callouts from emergency services (Police and Fire), but not causing widespread damage.
There have been localised power outages across the region. Vector is working on restoring power to these areas.
The latest MetService advice indicates that the weather system has moved on and we are not seeing the heavy impact that was predicted yesterday. Winds are starting to ease but there will be some rain bands with showers moving across the Auckland region.
“There may still be minor travel disruption on the roads this morning,” says Auckland Civil Defence Head of Emergency Operations Aaron Davis.
“While it’s been a wild lead-up to the holiday weekend, we expect the weather to settle down later today. Nevertheless, drivers should remain vigilant and take extra care on the roads,” he says.
Flooding, stormwater issues and damage to street trees should be reported to Auckland Council on 09 301 0101. For power outages phone 0508 VECTOR (0508 832 867) and for emergencies phone 111.
