Repairs at Skate Park

Repairs at Skate Park

Council is currently undertaking some maintenance on the Alfred Cox skate park.

Currently local contractors, Currie Construction are doing some repairs on a ramp, with further maintenance work to be done on signage and installing wheel chair access to toilet facilities at the clubrooms.

A working relationship with Te Ora Hou, allows both parties to support each other, with Council being able to respond to reactive requests to keep the park in good shape.

Te Ora Hou manager Jason Akuhata-Brown is passionate about the skate park and wants it to be at its best, “We want the park to be a place that we can be proud of”

Council is also committed, and is currently working with a consultant on a business plan for future development of the skate park.

The idea was put forward by coordinators of the Friends of Alfred Cox Skatepark group.

Council Community and Recreations Team Leader, Garrett Blair says, “We’ll carry on with the maintenance and repairs, but we can’t make any decisions until the business plan and funding are sorted”

Mr Akuhata-Brown has high aspirations for any improvements "Credit to the council for the maintenance work it has done, but we are talking about the next step-up.” But understands that you can’t get too far ahead of yourself "We realise that good things take time and I would rather go through the correct process than force it.”

Te Ora Hou is also in the process of developing the club rooms next to the skate park and do a lot of their own funding for it.

Te Ora Hou is a Maori, faith-based youth and community development organisation who help support young people and their families in partnership with whanau

Mr Akuhata-Brown is also involved with other youth based activities like the “bombs away” hui about the development of a bombing platform for Summer recreation.
