Help for heritage

Heritage protection gets a welcome boost this week with the injection of $80,000 into community heritage projects.

Applications are now being sought for Auckland Council Regional Historic Heritage Grants for the conservation, protection and restoration of significant heritage places, structures, archaeological sites, and sites of cultural and spiritual significance.

The funding application round opens on Tuesday 15 March 2016 and closes at 10pm on Friday 15 April 2016. Individual private owners, iwi or Māori groups, community groups, trusts and other organisations are invited to apply for a grant of up to $20,000.

“Our heritage is a legacy to pass on to future generations. Heritage reinforces our sense of history and place, is central to our wellbeing, and helps define what is unique and distinctive about Auckland,” says Auckland Development Committee Chair, Deputy Mayor Penny Hulse.

“We want to encourage community involvement in the care of our regionally significant heritage sites and places with this grant programme,” she says.

Heritage projects can include protection or enhancement of heritage buildings or sites; restoration of heritage features, including historical landscaping; repainting historic buildings; enabling public access to scheduled historic places; or providing public information or interpretive materials. Salaries and administrative costs are not funded.

“Decisions about which projects to fund will be made by 10 June and projects are expected to start after 30 June,” says Councillor Hulse.

Grant applications can be made on the Auckland Council website http://bit.ly/1QQiMUB .
