Travel the world in a day, right here in Auckland

Auckland’s best free one-day event is back for 2016 - featuring a spectacular mix of colour, sights, sounds and flavours from around the world. Celebrate all the countries and cultures that make up our diverse city at Auckland International Cultural Festival on Sunday 20 March.

Auckland Council’s Arts, Culture and Events Committee Chair, Alf Filipaina, is a regular festival attendee and has some recommendations; “The International Cultural Festival has been running for 17 years now and it’s one of my favourites - it really highlights and celebrates the rich cultures of Auckland. This year, I think visitors should try some Afghani food, check out Cornerstone Roots on the main stage, and join in with the traditional Maori sports. Spend the day exploring - you’re bound to find something you’ve never tried before!”

Cornerstone Roots headline the festival alongside Oceania Storm, both Aotearoa groups have members from across the Pacific and are no stranger to international stages. They’re joined by musicians and dancers throughout the day, representing everywhere from Japan to Croatia.

Countries who have joined the festival for the first time this year are Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, Congo, Portugal, West Indies, Egypt, and Bolivia.

There will be a wide range of arts and crafts on offer in the markets, plus sports and interactive activities for the whole family to join in on; including traditional Maori kite making. You can also contribute to our brand-new art installation and show us what your culture means to you.

One of the biggest draws each year is the vast array of food stalls – you’re bound to discover something new! Culinary delights include Portuguese pasteis de nata, Sri Lankan rotti, home-style Egyptian dishes, and Kurdish desserts.

A huge highlight of the day is the fiercely contested International Football Tournament – games are played throughout the day with a host of countries competing. Don’t miss the action!

This is your chance to travel around the world in one day, right here in Auckland.
