Celebrate our district’s parks

Parks Week, coming up in March, will celebrate the important role green spaces play in contributing to the health of our communities.

From 5-13 March, events will be held in different parts of the country to celebrate the week. In Kāpiti, activities include a Mayoral walk, guided cycle rides, a military fitness session, other guided walks and live music with national youth services provider Zeal.

“It’s important we join in these national celebrations as we manage 500 hectares of parks and sports grounds in the district, along with almost 80 kilometres of walkways, cycleways and horse riding paths - these spaces are one of the reasons people choose to live in Kāpiti and why visitors come here,” Mayor Ross Church says.

“The week is also a good opportunity to recognise the hard work that goes into keeping our parks and reserves looking good.”

The Mayor will kick Parks Week off with a twilight walk in Haruatai Park, Ōtaki on Monday 7 March from 6.30pm. Along with park experts, he will guide people around the area to look at rongoa and millennium plantings as well as the ancient swamp forest. There will be a free sausage sizzle at the end of the walk.

Residents are also being encouraged to take part in the #KapitiOutdoors campaign. As they take photos on Instagram, they can use the hashtag #KapitiOutdoors to share their parks adventure.
