Dog owners should be alert over Parvo-virus
Council echoes advice to dog owners to be alert over Parvo-virus
22 FEBRUARY, 2016
Council has taken the precaution of temporarily closing its animal shelter after information from the SPCA and vets that cases of Parvo-virus have been reported in Kāpiti.
Parvo-virus is a highly-contagious viral illness that affects dogs.
Nick Fowler Environmental Standards Manager says two cases have been confirmed at the shelter, which is being closed and sterilised as a precaution.
“This is a highly contagious disease and we want to ensure we don’t put other dogs at risk. No more dogs will be accommodated at the Council shelter until further notice. Owners of dogs that have been held there in the last two weeks are being contacted and told their dogs may have been exposed to the virus.
“We strongly advise pet owners to follow the advice of vets and the SPCA and check their pet’s vaccinations are up to date or to have animals immunised, if they haven’t been.”
Mr Fowler says, while the shelter is closed, any dogs that have to be taken off the streets because of aggressive behaviour will be housed in alternative accommodation.
If you are concerned your dog may be suffering from Parvo-virus, contact a vet immediately.
