A quick dip in a pool has been one of the coolest ways to keep refreshed during this sticky summer, and it’s also been one of the safest.
With children back at school, the busiest period for home pool use is over, and there have been no reported drownings, or near-misses during this period in home pools.
Between 2010-2014, six children aged under five drowned in home pools in the Auckland region. Nationally this was 18 children.
Pool fencing team leader Steve Bloxham says it’s important children and young people are given extra supervision around pools.
“We’re very pleased there have been no drownings or other reported emergencies in home pools in Auckland so far this summer. We encourage pool owners to regularly check pool gate springs and latches, to make sure they close and latch automatically, and that fences can’t be climbed through or over from the outside.”
“Inflatable pools are also fun, but they must be emptied when not in use. It would be great to have a 100 per cent safety record every summer. Please do everything you can to keep our youngest and most vulnerable Aucklanders safe,” he says.
Mike Shepherd, Director of Starship Child Health, believes the safety of children around pools can’t be underestimated.
"Kids love exploring, and we know that it’s hard to be constantly watching them. However, unfortunately children can tragically drown, or be seriously injured in swimming pools, silently and within seconds.”
WaterSafe Auckland (WAI) spokesperson Dr Kevin Moran adds: “We know that children aged under three years are at the highest risk of drowning in home pools. These regulations are here to help protect children, not hinder our enjoyment of the water.”
Each summer Auckland Council invests in a comprehensive pool safety campaign.
Over the holiday period Auckland Council has actively raised awareness of the dangers of pools, through post cards targeting swimming pool owners, produced kids colouring sheets and provided leaflets at key retailers of portable pools.
