Rotorua council moves to return springs land to iwi

Rotorua Lakes Council has moved to revoke the reserve status of water supply land at Hamurana Springs and transfer ownership back to Ngati Rangiwewehi.

It would spell the end of a long-held grievance for the iwi which recently celebrated the return of ownership of water supply land at Taniwha Springs.

A resolution made at today’s [Thursday 18 February] meeting of council’s Strategy, Policy and Finance Committee, the Hamurana Springs proposal will now go to the full council for consideration. If approved, because the land is owned by the Crown, the proposal would trigger a statutory process requiring a decision by the Minister of Conservation.
