Mayor welcomes growing support for new flag
Porirua Mayor Nick Leggett says
he’s encouraged by a recent poll showing growing support
for a new flag for New Zealand.
The poll of 1000
people commissioned by Change the NZ Flag shows 36% want a
new flag versus 56% who prefer the status quo - a
significant shift from last year when two thirds supported
the status quo.
"The results show that people are warming to the new design with the fern and stars.
Differentiating New Zealand from Australia was one of the strongest arguments for changing our flag, Mayor Leggett said.
"Our trade commissioners, diplomats and business leaders overseas know the power of a unique New Zealand identity, which is embodied in the new flag. The economic benefits are significant."
Mayor Leggett said it was also important to vote with future generations in mind.
"As a parent, I’m mindful that my children and children’s children will identify with symbols that are closer to home as opposed to a country 12,000 miles away.
"The Union Jack was appropriate for the past, but now we’re ready for a design that’s fit for the future.
"Our kids are also comfortable to display symbols of patriotism like the new flag.
"It really is time for change and to once again prove to the world we’re not afraid to do something different – something uniquely kiwi."
