Mayor Praises Bishop Barry’s Leadership
Christchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel says that the city will miss the style of leadership that Bishop Barry exemplified in post-earthquake Christchurch.
Mayor Dalziel says that Bishop Barry built very strong relationships across the city and was a regular participant in community commemorations and celebrations.
“He was a very thoughtful man and a good listener,” says Mayor Dalziel.
“I met with Bishop Barry in my role as Mayor, so I know how deeply he felt about all aspects of recovery, not just for the Catholic communities he served so ably, but for the city as a whole.
Mayor Dalziel acknowledged how instrumental Bishop Barry was in ensuring a good process was established to investigate and weigh up all the options around the future of the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament.
“This is an important part of Christchurch’s heritage and one he loved very much. Whatever the final outcome, we will know that no stone was left unturned to come to that conclusion.
“I will miss his wise counsel. May he rest in peace."
