Youth Council Seeks Young People Who Want to Make a Difference
Young people living in northern Ruapehu with a passion for their community are being asked to put themselves up for consideration as a Taumarunui-Ohura Youth Ambassador (TOYA).
Open to youth from 12 to 24 years living in National Park, Taumarunui or Ohura the Taumarunui-Ohura Youth Ambassadors together with the Waimarino-Waiouru Youth Ambassadors represent Ruapehu youth in their communities both within the district and nationally.
Ruapehu Policy Planning Officer Samantha Arthur-Curtis said that a Youth Ambassador position was a fantastic opportunity for any young person interested in making a positive contribution on behalf of Ruapehu youth while developing personal leadership and other skills.
“There are eight positions available with successful candidates needing to be able to attend one meeting a month in Taumarunui as well as organise and take part in youth development courses and workshops and be able to travel to national events as required,” she said.
“Youth Ambassadors will also be paid a small allowance per each monthly meeting.”
Ms Arthur-Curtis said that since their inception in 2013 TOYA had taken part in some amazing events and achieved some great outcomes for Ruapehu youth.
“At a district level this has included organising; Youth Workshops, the Taumarunui Christmas parade for the last two years, 2015 Neighbours day, 2015 Raise Your Living Standards Expo and at a national level attending the Festival for the Future and the Youth Council Conference for the last two years.”
“In May the Ruapehu District Youth Council won the ‘Youth Group’ category award as part of the national Youth Week awards hosted by the Minister for Youth Nikki Kaye.”
“We are looking for young people with a passion for their community and who want to make a real difference to the lives of Ruapehu youth and continue the legacy of achievement of the Youth Ambassadors up to this point.”
Ms Arthur-Curtis said that applications are open from Monday 1 February through to Friday 11 March.
“Anyone interested needs to complete an application form which is available from the Council office or website www.ruapehudc.govt.nz, REAP or Taumarunui High School.”
