Spark Gets on Board Campaign to Buy Back Abel Tasman Beach

Spark Gets on Board Campaign to Buy Back Abel Tasman Beach

Company pledges $20,000 to campaign

Encourages other New Zealand businesses to join in with their support

Spark today announced it is pledging $20,000 to the campaign on Givealittle which aims to buy back a seven hectare private beach in Abel Tasman National Park’s Awaroa Inlet.

Managing Director Simon Moutter said: “We love the idea behind this campaign – New Zealanders using technology to join together and do something that will benefit us as a nation, for generations to come. Ten years ago, before platforms like Givealittle existed, this idea probably wouldn’t have made it beyond the Christmas BBQ where Duane and Adam dreamed it up. Now, with crowdfunding, these guys have managed to raise more than $250,000 in the space of a few days.

“Two million is a big ask for a small country like ours so at Spark we wanted to chip in and do our bit, and we’re encouraging other New Zealand businesses to join us. New Zealand only has a couple of weeks to secure this beautiful beach – otherwise the opportunity will be lost.”

Moutter said Spark had also offered legal and other procedural support, should the $2 million be raised and the campaign move to the next stage of tendering for the land.

The campaign is set up on Givealittle as a “project”. A Givealittle project page will only pay the funds if they reach the target of $2 million, and if the target is not reached the page will not charge donors’ credit cards. Givealittle will not release the funds until the tender for the property is secured.
