Week beginning 26/1: Paekakariki Hill road closed

Paekakariki Hill road closed

Paekākāriki Hill Road is closed until further notice following a slip overnight. A fallen tree and slip material is blocking the road near Battle Hill. Porirua City Council is leading the clean-up effort and has put warning signs and traffic management in place.

New Te Ara O Whareroa cycleway through Queen Elizabeth Park officially opened

This exciting new off-road connection between Raumati and Paekākāriki officially opened over the weekend with much fanfare. The track, already proving popular with locals and out-of-towners, represents the first leg of an estimated $5million Stride N’ Ride package of cycleway improvements throughout the district. Through Stride ‘n Ride, over the next three years, the Council will improve key commuter connections to busy rail stations, schools, local centres and the new Kāpiti Expressway cycleway. Work has already begun to consult communities about how they’d like the cycleways developed along arterial roads in their neighbourhoods.

Linkages will be developed to the new expressway cycleway through the arterial routes of Poplar Avenue, Raumati Road, Kapiti Road, Mazengarb, Otaihanga and Te Moana Roads. This will allow cyclists to connect safely with the new expressway cycleway to make commuting via cycle throughout Kāpiti safer and easier.

The package is part of the Urban Cycleways Programme, which enables key, high-value urban cycleway projects to get underway around the country over the next three years. The programme is a shared investment from local councils, the urban cycleways fund and the national land transport fund, administered by the NZ Transport Agency.

Ti Ātiawa courts progress

Resurfacing of the Te Atiawa tennis and netball courts was completed over the weekend, marking a major milestone in the progress of project, which is a key initiative in Council’s FutureKāpiti – Long term plan.

Crews worked over the weekend to lay asphalt and provide a new smooth surface at the ten as-new courts. Work so far has included removing part of the fencing, digging out the area, removing existing asphalt (enough debris to fill main pool of the aquatic centre incidentally - approx. 1100m2 was removed!) compacting underlying layers, laying subsoil drainage to manage ground water levels, and addition of a water-proof chip seal coat. The courts will need time for the asphalt to cure before line markings can begin.

Work still to complete is reinstatement of fencing, completion of swale drainage, socket re-installation (for netball hoops and tennis nets), line marking (2 to 3 weeks’ time), and some other minor improvements.

The courts should be ready to play on by late February, depending on weather, and acrylic playing surface will be added later in the year.

Kāpiti sport and recreation clubs and services database

With 2016 now in full swing, it's the perfect time to try a new hobby on the coast.
Kāpiti Coast District Council and Sport Wellington have teamed up to provide up-to-date details for clubs, groups and services in Kāpiti.

The database, which is now live on Sport Wellington’s website, is a useful tool for sourcing contacts and information for more than 230 sport and recreation providers on the coast.

Council and Sport Wellington spent weeks before Christmas emailing, calling and visiting the district’s information centres, pools and libraries to source the information.
