School Bus Education Campaign Returns

School Bus Education Campaign Returns

School buses will be back on the roads shortly as term begins, and Queenstown Lakes District Council is once again teaming up with police and bus operators Go Bus, to remind all drivers that they must slow to 20km/hr when passing a stationary school bus that is dropping off or picking up children.

QLDC School Travel Plan Coordinator Kirsty Barr said that in the days leading up to the start of school, drivers in the Queenstown and Wanaka area could expect to find ‘dummy school buses’ parked on roadsides as a reminder to slow down and use extreme caution when passing school buses.

Police will be in the vicinity to monitor driving behaviour. They will flag down drivers who go faster than 20km/h past any bus displaying the ‘SCHOOL’ sign and have a friendly discussion about the importance of sticking to the speed limit, in the interests of saving young lives.

This is a particularly important message for visitors who may not be aware of the rules and a good reminder for locals who haven’t seen buses around for a month or so.

Electronic signs will be used to raise awareness of school buses, and once school starts, police will also be closely monitoring driver behaviour.
