The Week in Kapiti
The Week in Kapiti
This is the last week to take part in Kāpiti Coast District Libraries Waitangi Spoon Portrait challenge.
The libraries are on a mission to create more than 175 wooden spoon portraits – at least one for each year since the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840.
The aim is to celebrate the people of Kāpiti – both past and present – by making a spoon portrait of a local person of their choice (if you’re looking for inspiration, check out the library’s online database of historical photographs Mau Mahara).
To take part collect a free spoon for decorating and register at your local library. Entries are open to all ages and close January 15, 2016.
Spoon portraits will be displayed at local libraries throughout February and March .
For more information contact council’s Heritage and Māori Collections Coordinator Tiriata Carkeek on 0800 486 486.
Paraparaumu Escarpment
More work will be underway at the Paraparaumu Escarpment soon, as part of the on-going management of the slip-prone slope.
Debris removal from the exposed slips and tracks was completed in December and the next step of hydro seeding, which is applying grass and other ground stabilising plant seed in a liquidised wood fibre matrix, will be underway soon.
This work does depend on the weather, but is scheduled to start and end this week.
Work will take place between the hours of 7am to 6pm, and
will include an operator with a light truck and a spray tank
applying the seed matrix. The work site may take up some of
the Epiha St car park with a water storage tanker.
The
Epiha and Riwai street tracks will be closed for up to three
hours outside commuting times and the track from Panorama
Grove to Epiha St will be closed for the duration of the
work.
Raumati Straights Upgrade
The
Raumati Straights Upgrade is underway.
The works are part of the Mackays to Peka Peka (M2PP) Expressway project, and will be carried out on the two kilometres of Raumati Straights, between Paekākāriki and Paraparaumu.
If you’re travelling between Paekākāriki and Paraparaumu you’ll notice a reduced speed limit and changes to the road layout.
This upgrade will smooth out the bumpy section of the highway between Mackays Crossing and Raumati, to ensure a smoother, safer, seamless connection between the M2PP Expressway and Tranmission Gully.
