Mamaku residents urged to conserve water as pump fails

Mamaku residents urged to conserve water as pump fails

The main bore pump that Rotorua Lakes Council uses to supply water to the Bay of Plenty township of Mamaku failed last night.

Water operations manager Eric Cawte said the council was currently using a backup bore pump supplemented by a water tanker, but this bore and pump can only supply a limited flow of water.

“This means that the system will not keep up with the current high demand due to the hot, dry weather until the main pump is repaired which will take a number of days.

“If water use is not significantly reduced urgently, loss of supply at times is likely to occur,“ he said.

The key messages for all residents connected to the Mamaku water supply, until further notice:

• Do not use garden sprinklers or irrigation systems

• Do not fill swimming pools and spa pools

• Avoid and minimise the use of hoses

• Attempt to reduce water consumption inside the house

• Use stored rainwater where possible

The council will keep users informed, via its website and social media platforms and will advise when the main system is back in order.

“Your water conservation efforts are greatly appreciated, and hopefully will avoid any loss of supply,” said Mr Cawte.
