Residents reminded to use water wisely
Dunedin (Friday, 18 December 2015) In response to NIWA’s prediction of a drier than normal summer, the Dunedin City
Council and Otago Regional Council are advising consumers to use water outside wisely.
Dunedin’s water system relies on river flows, which feed reservoirs and treatment plants. When river levels fall
Dunedin’s water supply is affected. While water levels are sufficient at this time the DCC and ORC are asking residents
and businesses to take preventative measures to reduce water waste.
“Before the peak of summer, we recommend urban consumers fix any leaking taps or pipes around the house, mulch their
gardens and make sure any timers fitted to garden irrigation systems are correctly adjusted to minimise water losses,”
says DCC Group Manager Water and Waste Laura McElhone.
“We also advise consumers on rural water schemes to check they have the recommended two days tank storage and that
on-property leaks are fixed.”
Dr McElhone says the DCC has no water restrictions in place at the current time as these measures are only employed as
required.
“What’s important is that all residents across the Dunedin area start thinking about how they are using water and how
they can change what they are doing to use water as efficiently as possible.”
The DCC and ORC will continue to monitor the situation over the summer. If water restrictions are required at a later
date the DCC will advise consumers through the DCC website, social media and through the media. Consumers may also call
