Marine Parade viewing platform not a pier

The Napier City Council wishes to refute misconceptions in the public arena that the viewing platform constructed on
Marine Parade is a pier.
The platform cost $1.4 million out of the $2.6 million set aside for the entire Napier CBD stormwater upgrade.
The upgrade, which is not finished yet, is Council’s way of ensuring it has the right infrastructure to cope with
extreme weather events, as flooding caused by heavy rainfall has caused problems in the CBD in the past. It has been
setting aside money for this upgrade since 1995.
The platform’s main purpose was to cover up an unattractive stormwater outfall, said Chief Executive Wayne Jack. The
fact it would give people using it a unique view of Hawke Bay was a bonus.
“It was never designed as a pier and it would be irresponsible of Napier City Council to undertake that kind of
development as it would be extremely costly to ratepayers.”
