Heart of the City welcomes recommendation on Freyberg Square

Heart of the City welcomes an Auckland Council recommendation to progress with an upgrade of Freyberg Square with a staged approach to managing vehicle access.

Heart of the City recognises the importance of Freyberg Square as a well-loved public space in the city centre.

“However it is important to take account of concerns raised by business and look at the transformation of this area in a holistic way. We have actively sought for a wider plan to be developed for the High Street District before any decisions are made about changing vehicle access through the district”, said Viv Beck, Chief Executive.

“We welcome the approach that Auckland Council has taken which has shown an understanding of the needs of business and its importance to the ongoing success of the precinct.”

Ms Beck said “a High Street District plan will soon be underway with local businesses and the wider community. This will set out a vision for the area and will guide future investment in High Street.”

“Heart of the City lobbied strongly for the commitment of $15 million from the city centre targeted rate for investment into High Street, which is renowned for its contribution to the city’s offering.”

The recommendation to retain vehicle access in a staged manner also means that there is greater flexibility through any associated construction.
