Waikato Expressway another step closer
The AA says today’s opening of the Cambridge Section of the Waikato Expressway is an important milestone for transport
infrastructure in the region.
The 16-km stretch of highway is the third of the seven sections of the Waikato Expressway to be completed, and its
opening came six months ahead of schedule.
AA President Trevor Follows said the new, four-star road presents important benefits, locally and across the region.
“This is a world-class road that will save lives, improve travel times and ease congestion,” he said. “It brings us
another step closer to completion of the Waikato Expressway, which is the region’s number-one transport priority.”
Mr Follows commended the NZ Transport Agency and its partners on their steady progress.
“To complete the project well ahead of time, with an excellent safety and environmental record and with minimal impact
on the existing transport network is a sensational effort,” he said.
The AA acknowledges that work has already started on the Huntly section, and work is scheduled to start on the Hamilton
Section next year. The entire 102-km Waikato Expressway is due to be complete in 2020.
