Go back in time with Our Story

The clock will go back on Petone Foreshore on Wellington Anniversary Day next year as Lower Hutt heritage is celebrated with Our Story.

Our Story is a fun family day out to remember the shared bicultural history of Lower Hutt. It will take place on Monday 25 January on Petone Foreshore near the Petone Settlers Museum from 11am to 4pm.

Lower Hutt Mayor Ray Wallace says “It’s great to have a day where we can all come together to remember our shared history. We all come from different places, but what we share is our sense of community.”

There will be games and activities for everyone to participate in, including two costume competitions.

The first competition involves creating a hat that celebrates Lower Hutt’s heritage. This could be a painstakingly accurate recreation of a period hat, or something more creative and interpretive.

The second competition involves creating a full costume, something that wouldn’t look out of place in Victorian Petone.

Entry to both competitions is free; all that’s needed is to turn up on the day wearing your creation.

The competitions make a great project to work on during the school holidays and there are plenty of prizes on offer.

The categories are:

· Best Hat,

· Best Adult Costume and,

· Best Child Costume.

Even if costumes aren’t your thing, come down for a great day of fun and learning on the beach.
