Accessible Properties to purchase housing from Hamilton City Council
Thursday, 10 December 2015
Accessible Properties is delighted to have had a proposal to purchase more than 300 homes from Hamilton City Council accepted.
New Zealand’s largest non-government social housing provider has a long history of providing good quality housing. We focus on people with disabilities, the elderly and those on low incomes.
The 344 homes are currently tenanted to people in their retirement – this proposal means tenants will be able to remain in their homes. We also expect most future tenants will be of retirement age.
“We are delighted to have had this proposal accepted,” says Accessible Properties General Manager Andrew Wilson. “We have a long history of supporting people who need good quality housing and we look forward to being able to extend that to more people in Hamilton.”
“We are also committed to modernising and improving the newly acquired homes.”
Accessible Properties and its parent company IHC has been involved with social housing in Hamilton since 1954 with the opening of Christopher House. It manages more than a hundred homes in Waikato including 28 newly built homes.
Hamilton is one of five cities Accessible Properties has chosen to focus on for providing social housing for affordable rental by households. The others are Auckland, Wellington, Tauranga and Christchurch.
The news follows Monday’s announcement that Accessible Properties would partner with the Government to provide more than 350 new homes in Auckland.
“We look forward to supporting our new tenants in Hamilton when we take over in March next year,” says Andrew Wilson. “We want to make sure they have good quality affordable housing and access to any other support they may need.”
