Considering standing as a candidate for the Auckland Council elections?
The next local council elections will be held in October 2016.
Auckland Council has information resources including a short video on itswebsite to provide advice and information for prospective candidates.
Dale Ofsoske, Auckland Council’s Electoral Officer, says it’s important that potential candidates are aware of what’s involved in standing.
“We want to let people know now, so they have time to think over the opportunity before nominations open next July.
“Candidates can stand for local board member, councillor or mayor from across the region, representing all parts of the community.
“Auckland Council’s elected members come from all walks of life and generally have a strong desire to serve their community.”
Capabilities useful for elected members to be successful in their role include:
• Quality decision-making
• Political acumen
• Leadership
• Cultural awareness
• Strategic thinking
• Knowledge and understanding of Auckland Council and local government
• Communication and engagement
• Relationship building and collaboration
• Strong governance capability.
The 149 local board member roles are generally part-time, whilst local board chairs and councillors have busy full-time roles.
“Becoming an elected member is a great opportunity to help shape the future of our growing, vibrant city,” says Dale.

Notes
• To run, a candidate needs to submit a nomination paper. Nominations open on 15 July 2016 and close on 12 August 2016.
• Candidates must be enrolled on the New Zealand Parliamentary electoral roll, be a New Zealand citizen and have two people nominate them. Those two people must live in the area where the candidate is standing.
