Trout boost for Lake Whakamarino

Staff from Fish & Game have completed a long road trip to transport a truckload of young trout from Rotorua to small hydro lakes south of Waikaremoana .

Fish & Game officers released (on 2/12/2015) 500 rainbow trout and 200 browns reared at their Ngongotaha hatchery.

Fish & Game Officer Mark Sherburn says that fish are released annually into the small hydro lakes Whakamarino (also known as Tuai) which has a reputation for some nice brown trout, and nearby Lake Kaitawa.

“Both locals and anglers from around the country enjoy the fishing at Tuai and Lake Kaitawa.”

Mr Sherburn reminds anglers that if they’re fishing from a boat on Tuai they can no longer anchor, they have to tie up to the shore or be drifting.

“The rule is to minimise the risk of spreading pest weeds to nearby Lake Waikaremoana. Bits of weed caught on an anchor warp can be transferred to another lake.”

Mr Sherburn says that the Hawkes Bay Regional Council established a weed cordon at Home Bay Lake Waikaremoana, part of ongoing moves to raise awareness of the risks posed by pest weeds.
