Further discussion and planning of bus stops for CBD

Further discussion and planning of bus stops for CBD

The Traffic Subcommittee have decided the location of bus stops in Lower Hutt's central business district requires further discussion and planning before a recommendation can be made to Council.

The Subcommittee considered a proposal for two new bus stops in order to improve road safety and relieve traffic congestion around the current bus stop outside Cash Converters on Queens Drive.

Officers recommended Margaret Street as the most suitable location after considering the safety benefits such as adequate footpath and road space, good lighting and CCTV coverage. The report also advised Margaret Street was the most suitable location in considering traffic, with adequate space for the buses, good visibility and no conflicts with service lanes or motor crossings.

Bus operator NZ Bus, public transport provider Greater Wellington Regional Council, and the Police supported the recommendation.

Submissions opposed to the location of new bus stops on Margaret Street came from retailers and businesses on the street who expressed concern that placing bus stops would have a negative impact on retail activity, and the ambience of the street. They suggested there were other locations available that would be less impacted by the introduction of bus stops.

After discussion and consideration, the Subcommittee was divided in its vote and officers were asked to reconsider options for the location of additional bus stops, including the south of Queens Drive.
