Feedback Sought on Ideas for Revitalising Taumarunui

The Taumarunui Ohura Ward Committee (TOWC) would like local community feedback on the big project ideas being considered by community group‘Revitalising Taumarunui’ for beautifying and uplifting the township.

Revitalising Taumarunui has been formed as a branch of local promotional association Enterprising Taumarunui Inc. (ETI) with the aim of transforming the Taumarunui central business district.

Comprising engaged community members who are passionate about refreshing and reenergising Taumarunui the group is committed to putting the township back on a path to achieving its economic, social and tourism potential.

Councillor Karen Ngatai said that Revitalising Taumarunui had recently presented their ideas and planned work programme to the Taumarunui-Ohura Ward Committee (TOWC).

“Revitalising Taumarunui has some fantastic ideas for giving Taumarunui a facelift many of which are simple, low cost and easily implemented with a little bit of coordinated community effort and goodwill,” she said.

“There are however some much bigger ‘vision’ projects that would cost significantly more to implement and that would have a much larger impact on the town.”

“TOWC fully supports Revitalising Taumarunui’s vision for reenergizing Taumarunui however we would also like to get a feeling for what local residents think about the ‘big idea’ projects being put up for consideration.”

“These include such ideas as; transforming small unused spaces into parks (parklets), turning the one-way section of Manuaute St into a pedestrian mall with a playground, installing a fenced ‘active area’ on Hakiaha St including a bike park and playground, and lighting up Hakiaha St with LED lights to create a nighttime light spectacle.”

“People can send in their thoughts on-line via the website or fill out one of the Taumarunui Revitalisation feedback flyers that have been distributed around town.”

“Anyone wanting to know more about Revitalising Taumarunui, their planned beautification work programme and how they can get involved can call me on 07 896 6658.”
