End in sight for Te Atatu Interchange upgrade
The NZ Transport Agency says it’s on the home
straight towards finishing the upgrade of the Te Atatu
Bridge as part of the SH16 Te Atatu Interchange upgrade
project.
Concrete will be poured this weekend (5 December) which will complete the strengthening work on the newly widened bridge over the Northwestern Motorway (SH16).
The work will have an impact on motorists using the interchange, with significant lane restrictions from 10pm Saturday 5 December to 5am Monday 7 December.
“We know this ongoing work has tested the patience of people living, working and travelling through this interchange but the good news is that this is the last significant disruption before Christmas,” says Brett Gliddon Auckland Highway Manager.
“The end is now in sight, with further work to lay the final road surface expected to be carried out in March next year. That will complete the works on this section of the Northwestern upgrade.”
“When this project is completed early next year it will have significantly widened the Northwestern Motorway between Te Atatu and Henderson Creek increasing motorway capacity as part of the Western Ring Route” says Mr Gliddon.
“It will also improve access to and from the motorway for vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists.”
The lane closures will be from 10pm Sat 5 Dec to 5am Mon 7 Dec and are as follows:-
• Reduced traffic lanes over Te Atatu Bridge
• The right turn from Te Atatu South to the citybound on-ramp will be closed
• The citybound loop motorway on-ramp will be open
• One lane only on the westbound motorway off-ramp towards Te Atatu Peninsula
• The right turn from the citybound motorway off-ramp towards Te Atatu South will be closed
• The right turn from Te Atatu Peninsula to the westbound on-ramp will be closed
• The northwestern cycleway and motorway will remain open.
This work is part of the Te Atatu Interchange Upgrade Project, one of six projects either completed or under construction to link the Northwestern and Southwestern (SH20) motorways and providing a motorway alternative to SH1 known as the Western Ring Route. The project is widening the five existing motorway on-ramps and exits at Te Atatu and improving access for vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians. It is also widening the Northwestern motorway between the Te Atatu interchange and Henderson Creek and is due to be completed early 2016.
