Rutherford Park Expenditure Approved

Nelson City Council has approved a further $700,000 expenditure for the redevelopment of Rutherford Park, to include a new and improved parking layout with bus, pedestrian and disabled access to the new Trafalgar Centre northern building which is currently under construction.

Councillors voted to support the unbudgeted expenditure based on a concept design that moves the parking area to the south side of the main building, leaving more room to the north west of the site for amenity open space. It connects the Trafalgar Centre and Rutherford Park to the city centre via the Maitai Walkway and the Maitai River footbridge.

Nelson Mayor Rachel Reese says that the expenditure represents a long term investment for the future of the city, and that in terms of the scale of the project the extra funding is acceptable.

“We want to get the Trafalgar Centre open for use, and the Rutherford Park Development is an integral part of that,” she says. “This concept is well thought out and developed and will play a significant role in the success of the Trafalgar Centre as a recreational facility and a community asset.”

The additional $700,000 will be funded from the Long Term Plan $2 million Roading, Car parking and Landscaping Allocation, and $300,000 Walking and Cycling Allocation. This brings the total budget for the Rutherford park development to $3,005,000.

The concept was designed by Irving Smith Jack architects and Nelmac in collaboration with council officers, with input from the Urban Design Panel. The concept will now go in to the detailed design phase for further development
