Aucklanders signing up for White Ribbon Queen Street march
Media Release
19 November 2015
White Ribbon march on Queen Street on 25th November is attracting huge support from Aucklanders as they sign up to
attend this significant event to campaign against violence towards women.
More than a thousand people are expected to take part in this march along Queen Street with Auckland Central businesses,
organisations, workers, visitors and residents from all over the city joining in to mark the White Ribbon Day on 25th
November. The march aims to deliver an impactful message not only to Auckland but across the country that we wish to
eliminate violence towards women.
Skycity is showing support for this cause by lighting the Sky Tower in white flickering lights on 24th and 25th
November. Skycity frequently lights the Sky Tower to show support for a number of organisations and special events.
Some shocking reminders:
• Aotearoa NZ has the highest rate of domestic violence in the developed world
•
• 1 in 3 women in New Zealand experience violence from a partner in their lifetime
•
• On average, 14 women are killed each year by a member of their own family
•
• 50% of the 126 family violence deaths in New Zealand from 2009 to 2012 were caused by intimate partners
•
• 73% of the deaths were women killed by their male intimate partners
•
This is a call-to-action for everyone, particularly men, who can make a positive social difference in this area. In
solidarity, we will all commit to support safe and healthy relationships with women and have the courage to challenge
abusive behaviour.
