The Wellington Food Forest Proposal
The Mt. Crawford Community Gardens Trust & the recently formed Wellington Food Forest Initiative have developed a proposal for the establishment of a public food
forest, on the former Department of Corrections property on Miramar peninsula. This innovative project would contribute
greatly toward moves being made, tostrengthen Wellington’s resilience.
Developing this food forest would be a long term project, which would eventually result in the establishment of a
low-maintenance sustainable plant based food production system, similar to woodland eco-systems. It would incorporate
fruit & nut trees, shrubs, berries, herbs, vines, mushrooms & perennial vegetables which have yields directly useful to humans.
It is also proposed that the former Mt. Crawford prison workshops & administration buildings could be upgraded, to function as an operational base & plant nursery for this project.
Other priorities would be to; construct a number of recreational areas, multi-purpose tracks & a walkway linking Shelly Bay with Scorching Bay; install some suitably themed sculptures & historical/educational displays throughout the forest.
It is the intention of the Wellington Food Forest Initiative to present this proposal to the Wellington City Council, at
their Urban Agriculture meeting on the 25th of November 2015.
