Warning on fishing gear at port

Warning on fishing gear at port

13 November 2015
Cray pots, longlines and other buoyed fishing gear are navigation hazards in or near Port Taranaki and any found there will be removed, says the Harbourmaster, Capt Neil Armitage.

Capt Armitage says such gear is prohibited from the port and its approaches. “Buoys, lines and fishing equipment pose a serious hazard for the safe navigation of shipping in the area,” he says. “Any such gear found there will be taken away immediately.”

The gear will be taken to the landward side of the pilot boat jetty and will be available for collection between 9am and 4pm weekdays.

“Details of vessels involved will be recorded and we may take action to recover costs if there are repeat offences,” says Capt Armitage.
