Motorway lane closures for Auckland marathon
Two lanes of the Auckland Harbour Bridge as well as neighbouring motorway ramps will be closed this Sunday
morning (1 November) for the annual Auckland marathon.
The two southbound clip-on lanes of the bridge will be closed from 4am to allow the estimated 11,000 participants to
safely complete the course, and the Transport Agency plans to have all lanes open again by 11am.
One lane of the Northern Motorway southbound will be closed from the Esmonde Road interchange, along with the Onewa Road
southbound on-ramp to the motorway (including the bus-only lane).
The southbound Shelley Beach Road and Fanshawe Street off-ramps, as well as the Curran Street on-ramp for northbound
drivers, will also be closed for the marathon.
“The marathon’s timed to cause as little disruption as possible to drivers,” says the Transport Agency’s Auckland
Highway Manager Brett Gliddon.
“The traffic during early morning Sundays is usually very light and we aim to have all the lanes re-opened before
traffic flows get busier.”
“However the closures do have the potential to cause delays so we encourage people to allow extra time for their journey
and avoid the Harbour Bridge altogether if they can during the marathon.”
“Along with lane changes, we know that watching the marathon can be distracting, so motorists should take extra care and
keep their eyes on the road as they travel through these sections of the Northern Motorway.”
The Northern Busway Bus Only lanes from Constellation Drive to Onewa will also be closed, along with some disruption to
local roads and public transport. For more information on those visit https://at.govt.nz/about-us/news-events/events-causing-delays/
