Midway Beach the place for Guy Fawkes bonfires
Midway Beach the place for Guy Fawkes bonfires
Fireworks enthusiasts planning a bonfire this Guy Fawkes Night should head to Midway Beach.
A special permit has been granted for the stretch of beach between Midway Surf Life Saving Club and the “Green Light” for Thursday 5 November, from 6pm to 12am only.
“There’s still plenty of wood along the beach in this area. Some it has already been put into heaps and people are encouraged to make the most of this once-a-year opportunity,” says principal rural fire officer Ray Dever.
Bonfires are not permitted on other beaches in the Gisborne district except Tolaga Bay, where the opportunity will be taken to burn some of the slash on the beach under the control of the fire service.
No other permits will be issued for bonfires including those on private property.
“All year round a restricted fire season is in place in Gisborne city, rural urban areas and the district’s beaches,” says Mr Dever.
“Fire permits are required for all fires except gas barbecues and gas cookers. ”
For any fires, including open rubbish fires, incinerators, hangi and umu, you must have a fire permit. Fires are not permitted after dark.
Permits take up to three days to issue and are free of charge.
You can apply for a permit from customer services in Fitzherbert Street or Te Puia Springs or online at www.gdc.govt.nz .
Anyone with questions about lighting fires should check Council’s website or contact Mr Dever on 06 867 2049.
