Council advises residents to stay away from rivers and streams - they're rising and running faster than they normally do.
Take care on the roads – watch your travelling distances and keep speed down.
Take care and stay home if you don't have to travel.
If you're in a flood prone area you should check your drains are clear and keep an eye on the situation.
If you have any concerns you can get in touch with us on 0800 486 486.
We are expecting a king tide around midday which means the river mouths will take on a lot more water. Please STAY AWAY from these areas.
A message from the Wellington Regional Emergency Management Office (WREMO)
Never try to walk, swim, or drive through moving floodwater. This is usually how people end up being killed in floods - attempting to drive through water and then getting stuck, or people playing in high water. If it is moving swiftly, even water 15 centimetres deep can sweep you off your feet, and your car off the road.
Don't go playing in surface flooding either, it's often contaminated by sewage as neither the stormwater or sewage networks can handle the amount of water, and no one goes swimming in the septic tank for fun! If you've had to go out in flood water, presume everything it comes into contact with has been contaminated with untreated sewage, and clean up accordingly.
