One week left to share your ideas for the new Eastern Recreation and Sport Centre
Residents have until next Friday 30 October to share their ideas for the water toys and other leisure attractions they would like to see in the new Eastern Recreation and Sport Centre on QEII Park.
Christchurch City Council launched its Your Play, Your Say campaign on 17 September. The campaign is giving residents the opportunity to have their say about how the $6.5 million given to the Council by the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal Trust for water attractions at the new Eastern Recreation and Sport Centre should be spent.
Since then, residents have had the opportunity to provide feedback online and at drop-in sessions at selected libraries. Pupils from local schools have also had a chance to have their say, with a number of children presenting their ideas to Mayor Lianne Dalziel at the Your Play, Your Say launch last month. The Council has so far received more than 370 responses to Your Play, Your Saycampaign.
Residents still have time to share their ideas for the new facility online at www.yourvoice.ccc.govt.nz. The most popular ideas will be presented to architects from Warren and Mahoney, who are currently working on the concept design for the new facility.
Major Facilities Unit Manager Alistair McGuffie says the Council is pleased with the amount of feedback it has received from residents so far. However, it still wants to hear from others about what would make the new recreation and sport centre a fun place for them, and their families, to visit.
"We want to make sure this facility is unique to the east so we want to hear from as many people, both young and old, who will be using the recreation and sport centre when it opens in 2018. So far, most people are telling us they want to see big hydroslides, a lazy river or a children's water playground in the new facility, but there are plenty of other options that residents may want.
"Residents still have a week to go online and share their ideas with us. Fill out our online survey, upload a video or simply post your ideas on the website. There's also a chance for residents to comment on other aspects of the facility they think they'll use - whether it's a sauna, spa pool, a toddlers' pool or a pool for lane swimming," Mr McGuffie says.
Construction of the Eastern Recreation and Sport Centre is scheduled to begin in August 2016 and it is expected the facility will open in 2018. As well as the $6.5 million set aside for water attractions, the Council has approved $30.5 million for the construction of the new facility.
