Green light for new regional bowls centre

22 OCTOBER 2015

Green light for new regional bowls centre

A new Regional Bowls Centre based in Naenae has been given the go-ahead and work is due to start this year. The Centre will have the capacity to host significant national and international events.

Hutt City Council voted earlier this week in favour of releasing funds to proceed with the development of the Bowls Centre on Walter Mildenhall Park, subject to the balance of Community Facilities Trust (CFT) fundraising being confirmed and an affordable contract value negotiated.

The centre will cost an estimated $6.25million. Council will fund $4.25million and the CFT $2million. The CFT has confirmed fundraising of $1.8million and is confident of soon reaching its target.

The CFT will manage the project and anticipates that it will be completed by the end of next year.

Mayor Ray Wallace welcomed the decision, saying it was an excellent addition to the range of community facilities in Naenae. The bowls centre will be part of a hub that includes facilities for tennis, basketball, petanque and badminton that will give a real focal point to the community.

Deputy Mayor and Chair of the City Development Committee, David Bassett said the centre would be a first-class facility that would benefit the entire region.
