Josh Emett, Project Crimson and local school children to plant 250 native trees on Kelvin Heights Peninsula
On Tuesday 20 October at 10am, Josh Emett from Rātā Dining will be joining Project Crimson Trustee Ruud Kleinpaste
(a.k.a “the Bugman”) and a class from Remarkables Primary School to plant 250 native trees on the Kelvin Heights
Peninsula, including southern rātās.
The Project Crimson Trust is a conservation charity with 25 years of experience in community restoration projects,
specifically focused on the protection and renewal of pohutukawa and rātā. Rātā Dining partnered with Project Crimson in
2012 and through their ongoing fundraising efforts enable Project Crimson to plant more native trees in the Queenstown
region. The Wakatipu Reforestation Trust is a partner of Project Crimson’s and helps to organize the planting,
identifying an appropriate site for revegetating and sourcing plants locally.
Project Crimson Communications Manager Melanie Seyfort says “This is the third year of planting in Queenstown with Rātā.
As well as getting our hands dirty with planting we also have an environmental education component to the planting day.
Project Crimson Trustee Ruud Kleinpaste will be taking the children from Remarkables Primary School through a hilarious
but information session about bugs and ecosystems. Green Cabs are also joining us this year as local sponsors.”
“This year’s planting is particularly special as the Trust celebrates its 25th anniversary. The fact that we are able to
assist restoration programmes in Queenstown is testament to the success of the Trust, which 25 years ago was focused
solely on pohutukawa restoration work in Northland. It's wonderful that over a quarter of a century our work has been
able to spread throughout New Zealand, and we are thrilled that organisations such as the Wakatipu Reforestation Trust
are in place to help restore native plants into high profile parts of the Wakatipu.”
The planting event takes place at the Kelvin Heights Peninsula - Earnslaw Slipway (off Kelvin Heights Golf Course Rd) –
look for orange road cones and Project Crimson signage.
