The Need for Tweed - Wellington Tweed Ride 2015
On Saturday November 7, cyclists will converge at Shelly Bay for the 2ndAnnual Wellington Need for Tweed Ride. Riders
are expected to dress in their finest tweeds and vintage garb and enjoy a casual ride around the scenic bays route with
a stop at Cog Park for tea, sandwiches and entertainment.
The ride is organised by urban specialist shop Bicycle Junction of Newtown. Proprietor Dan Mikkelsen has called it “a
light-hearted hark back to simpler times, when bikes rules the road and tweed and brogues were high leisure fashion.”The
Need for Tweed Ride enjoyed a great turnout in sunny April conditions last year, with various participants describing it
as some of the most fun they have had on a bike.
The Tweed Ride format has taken hold worldwide following the success of the initial “Tweed Run” in London in 2009.
Cyclists worldwide see it as an opportunity to combine fashion and fun, and dispel the modern image of cycling as
inaccessible and requiring of special clothing. The idea is simply to have fun on bikes, with gear and speed being
unimportant.
Tickets will be $10, which includes refreshments, and can be purchased through Bicycle Junction. The organisers were
eager to stress the inclusiveness of the ride. While Tweed and vintage are apropos, any fancy dress and bicycle
combination will be welcomed.
