Help Shape Auckland’s Regional Pest Management Plan

Media release

19 October, 2015

Help Shape Auckland’s Regional Pest Management Plan

Auckland is home to many pests – plants, animals, and diseases. These pests can have adverse effects on our environment, economy and health; controlling them has benefits for our native plants, animals and ecosystems. The Regional Pest Management Plan (RPMP), which guides Auckland’s management of these pests, is now being reviewed.

From today (Monday 19 October) Council is seeking informal feedback to gauge community expectations, and raise awareness of pest controls, plant pests, and marine biosecurity.

Councillor George Wood, Regional Strategy and Policy Committee Chair, says; “the review of the plan is the ideal opportunity for Aucklanders to have their say over the future of pest management in the region. We encourage as many people as possible to contribute.”

We’re seeking people’s views about all pests, and specific topics up for discussion are:

• Bangalow palms

• Widespread weeds (including moth plant, privet, and others)

• Red-eared slider turtles

• Feral goats

• Marine pest management in the Hauraki Gulf

• The future of community pest control

The feedback form is now available on Shape Auckland, and will be open until 27 November. Following this feedback period, there will be a formal consultation starting in 2016. Keep an eye out for details of upcoming information events around the region.
