Local school students ‘sing
in’ new Walter Nash Centre
A massed choir of around 750 local school students helped to celebrate the opening of the new Walter Nash Centre in Taita this morning, Friday 16 October, with a heartfelt rendition of the New Zealand folk song ‘He Honore’.
The students, from Taita College, Taita Central, St Michaels, Pomare School and Avalon Intermediate, joined well-known locals, including Silver Ferns coach Waimarama Taumaunu, at the Centre’s official opening.
The $12million Walter Nash Centre features five multi-purpose courts, a new library, fitness centre, meeting spaces and a café. Outside there are a further 11 courts and space for up to 205 additional carparks for large events. The new Centre combines the former stadium, community library, hall and netball courts.
“This fantastic building demonstrates our Council’s determination to provide services and facilities that promote well-being and an excellent lifestyle for our residents,” says Mayor Ray Wallace.
“Our Council is very committed to developing good facilities across the city and we particularly wanted some investment in our north east communities.”
Community Facilities Trust Chair Alister Skene says the opening of the new Centre is a landmark day.
“This is a centre that gives the Taita Community a true heart, and provides a sports facility the whole Hutt community will be proud of.”
This weekend a wide range of events and activities will help the community celebrate the Centre opening, including sports activities and demonstrations, children’s activities and an X-Box Sports eXpo on Sunday.
