Support for HURRAH’s ‘Desexy Revolution’
Auckland Council is joining the “Desexy Revolution” for November with a grant to independent Auckland dog rescue charity, HURRAH (Humane Rescue, Rehabilitation and Rehoming), which is offering heavily subsidised dog de-sexing services to help people who may not be able to afford the operation.
“Auckland Council actively encourages the de-sexing of dogs, as a vital part of reducing the number of unwanted dogs in the community,” says Tracey Moore, Manager Animal Management at Auckland Council.
“HURRAH’s ‘Desexy Revolution’ programme aims to help people understand the benefits of having their dog de-sexed, and can assist those who may not be able to afford the operation. Sadly, council’s animal shelters take in thousands of unwanted dogs each year.
“By supporting HURRAH’s November programme, we believe we can reduce the number of unwanted puppies born in Auckland by up to 400, and that’s a great thing.”
The grant enables HURRAH to offer 50 de-sexing operations during November.
“In addition to this Auckland Council is providing free microchips with registration on the New Zealand Companion Animal Register and of course licensed responsible dog owners get discounted dog registration rates,” says HURRAH Trustee Chrissy Clements.
To be eligible to participate, the dog must be your family pet and you must hold a current community services card.
Members of the public can request an application from desexy@HURRAH.org.nz.
Anyone looking to add a pet to their family by adopting an unwanted puppy or dog can contact Auckland Council animal shelters on 09 3010101 and speak to their helpful staff.
