Road Closures for Charter Parade
Several city roads will be closed from 11:45am to 12:45pm for the Charter Parade being held in Palmerston North tomorrow October 14 to ensure safety of participants and the public.
Roads included in the temporary closures are: Main Street off Pitt Street, Andrew Young Street, George Street, and The Square Edge.
The parade will march from Main Street on the Pitt Street intersection to the Cenotaph in The Square from 11.50am onwards.
Approximately 100 members of Linton Military Camp will parade along with the New Zealand Army Band.
In 1956 Linton Military Camp was given the Freedom of the Borough which allowed them the privilege to ‘march on ceremonial occasions with bayonets fixed, colours flying, drums beating and bands playing through the streets of the city.’
This was the first time the Freedom of the Borough had been bestowed upon a military camp in New Zealand. The honour was normally reserved for a regimental unit.
The Charter Parade is being organised by the New Zealand Army in association with the Palmerston North City Council.
