Mayor Len Brown has welcomed Auckland Council’s 2015 intake of cadets to its programme to raise the prospects of young Aucklanders.
This year Auckland Council has enrolled 25 young people in the cadet programme, an increase from 11 last year.
Auckland Council’s cadet programme has a strong focus on meeting business needs, essential for the long-term sustainability of the programme and attracts a diverse range of rangatahi from a variety of backgrounds and cultures.
“The programme is one of several council initiatives designed to tackle Auckland’s youth employment issue and while we have a way to go we are doing extremely well,” says Len Brown.
“We also have 57 graduates on our current graduate programme with a further 49 joining in February next year. We have a series of JobFests where unemployed young people can hook up with prospective employers, a Youth Connections initiative and our list of Auckland’s top companies who have committed to being Youth Employment Pledge Partners with us continues to grow.”
The council’s cadet programme is designed to provide opportunities for young people to learn and develop and council benefits by having a different range of perspectives and thinking, needed to build a high performing organisation.
Nine of the 2014 cadets who have completed their one-year programme have found permanent or fixed term employment with the Auckland Council family including Libraries, Customer Services and research unit RIMU. One of the other two is going back to full time study and the other is moving overseas.
“No-one is going on unemployment benefit and that is a very positive outcome,” says Mr Brown. “I’m not surprised because the young people who apply for this programme are passionate and are about their city. They are keen to learn, motivated and talented and the organisation is committed to giving them the right support so they can grow and establish successful careers.”
The 2015 cadets have started work in a number of departments including Parks, Operations, People and Capability, Resource Consents, Licensing and Compliance and Commercial Services. One is employed in the Office of the Mayor.
The cadet who worked in the Office of the Mayor during the past year now has a permanent role in Te Waka Angamau.
