House of Science Tauranga gains national recognition
The House of Science was pronounced the supreme winner at the Trustpower Community Awards in Tauranga recently.
The founder and director of this charitable trust, Chris Duggan, was also announced as a finalist in the 2015 Women of
Influence awards.
She is one of eight finalists in the ‘innovation’ category.
Known by local primary school kids as ‘The Science Lady’, Chris is passionate about the House of Science’s mission to
‘resource and connect the local science community’.
Chris and her large team of volunteers have continued to develop resource kits, now totalling 35 boxes which together
reach 1000 students every week.
Currently housed at Waikato University’s Coastal Marine Field Station, the House of Science is bursting at the seams
with three separate children’s programmes, several robotics teams, teacher professional development and science tutoring
sessions every week as well as intensive science and robotics holiday programmes.
The trust is hosting their inaugural science conference in November titled ‘Casting the Net’.
This promises to be an exciting day of networking with something for teachers (primary and secondary), tertiary
students, researchers, scientists and local science industry representatives.
