Man arrested following threats to WINZ office
Canterbury Police can confirm that a 32 year old man has been arrested and is due to appear in Christchurch District Court this afternoon on firearms related charges.
Canterbury Police District Commander, Superintendent John Price, says Police were alerted to an incident involving a man with a firearm outside the Linwood WINZ office shortly before 8.45am this morning. “The man failed to gain entry to the office and fled the scene in a vehicle. Police and AOS responded quickly, locating and stopping the vehicle at around 9.15am as it travelled along Ferry Road near the intersection with Ensors Road. The man was arrested without incident.
No one was injured but the Linwood WINZ office will remain closed while Police speak to staff. All other WINZ offices were placed in lockdown as a precaution for staff and the public. All WINZ offices have now reopened.
“Everyone has a right to be safe and feel safe whether at home or at work. This behaviour will not be tolerated and the prompt action of WINZ staff alerting Police ultimately led to the man being located and arrested. Police will be visiting WINZ offices around the District to reassure and support staff” explained Superintendent Price.
Police investigations are ongoing.
