New pathway artwork for Rotorua’s Green Corridor

Media release

2 October 2015

New pathway artwork for Rotorua’s Green Corridor

Work has started on painting new ground art along the Haupapa Street stretch of Rotorua's new Green Corridor.

The artwork will take Green Corridor users on a journey along a simulated dirt pathway intertwined with a stylised painted blue stream, with painted bridges for 'crossing' the water at various points.

The stream starts at the Tutanekai end of the Haupapa Street section of the corridor in the form of a spring, and is ‘fed’ along the pathway by stylised waterfalls. When finished it is hoped that waterfalls will appear to be cascading down the sides of some buildings along the street.

A variety of flora and fauna will be painted along the corridor surface, including plants, fish, eels and birds, as well as stylised mud pools.

The work has been designed specifically for the Green Corridor by local artist and graphic designer Glenn McLeary.

Mr McLeary said he was excited to be able to participate in the Green Corridor project.

“It’s great to see the corridor will include a number of great artworks along the way, including all the sculptures by our local artists. The mural we’re doing will add an element of fun and interactivity and I see it becoming a well-used section of the Green Corridor.”

Subject to weather conditions, painting of the new artwork along Haupapa Street is scheduled to be largely finished in time for the Green Corridor community celebration and official launch on the evening of Thursday, 8 October.

More information on the Green Corridor and launch celebration is available fromrotorualakescouncil.nz.
