Cabinet art coming to a street near you

More Chorus cabinets are set to become works of art in a street near you!

The Dunedin City Council has worked with Chorus over the past two years to see their street cabinets transformed into public art works by local artists – twenty cabinets across Dunedin have, so far, been commissioned.

“Following on from the great success of the first two rounds of Chorus cabinet art in Dunedin, we are working together with Chorus on transforming a third round of cabinets into art works,” says DCC Team Leader Urban Designer, Dr Glen Hazelton.

Chorus will pay $1000 for each cabinet, which includes the design, painting and application of graffiti guard. The graffiti guard is supplied and materials, such as paint and brushes, are paid for by Chorus on top of the fee.

Artists are provided with instructions on how to prepare the cabinet and graffiti-guard it once the painting is finished, with payment made once the work is satisfactorily completed.

In this third round of cabinets, Chorus is looking for proposals from Dunedin artists for the following locations:

485 South Road, Caversham

Corner of Antrim Street and North Road, North East Valley

178 Forbury Road, St Clair

Near corner of Dalgety Street and Jackson Street, St Kilda

Near corner of Scott Street and Eastbank Street, Waverley

Near corner of Cavell Street and Botha Street, Tainui

Corner of Ravelston and Cavell Street, Musselburgh

Corner of Bayfield Road and Musselburgh Rise

Corner of Ravelston Street and Tainui Road

63 North Taieri Road, Abbotsford.

Final locations selected will depend on the artworks provided, resource consent and affected parties’ approval.

“We are inviting proposals from interested artists around the city to take part in this project,” says Dr Hazelton. “We will be assisting in collating the proposals and organising resource consent for the works.”

To be considered to work on a cabinet, artists should supply an A4 hand sketch of their design, clearly define which cabinet their design is for, a short description of what the design means and a brief biography of any relevant experience. If artists would like their proposals returned after assessment, they should indicate this in their proposals.

These proposals should be sent to the Dunedin City Council by 12pm on 30 October 2015.

Chorus will make the final decision on which art works it chooses, consult with the adjoining landowner if necessary, and engage the artists to do the work. It is envisaged the work will be completed in December-March, once consents are finalised.
